Our Backpacking 101 class introduces participants to the fundamentals of backpacking, providing the knowledge and skills needed for safe and enjoyable backcountry adventures. Bring your own backpack and gear and join us on a 3.9 mile hike to Matts creek shelter on the iconic Appalachian trail. We’ll cover essential topics like gear selection, efficient packing, navigation, and campcraft. You’ll also learn key safety practices, including wilderness first aid, food storage, and how to minimize your environmental impact using Leave No Trace principles. Whether you’re new to backpacking or refreshing your skills, this class will help you plan and embark on outdoor excursions with a focus on safety and environmental stewardship.
